PRODUCT DESIGN ENGINEER - CONSUMER PRODUCTS

Introduction:

We are working with an organisation that require a Design Engineer to strengthen their R&D Team and assist with current and future generation New Product Development projects.

The position will be based in the North Birmingham area and will join a small existing team of designers and assist with the creation of products that comprise of a myriad of processes and materials including electro-mechanical, plastics mouldings, metal structures / enclosures and fabrications.

This position will see a product life cycle through the complete process from creation to product launch and all the product testing, material selection and compliance procedures along the way.

Requirements of a Product Design Engineer:

  • The right applicant will have already gained exposure of working in a Design for Manufacturing environment where prototype builds, design concessions and quality considerations are part of everyday projects.  
  • Good 3D CAD experience is essential (Ideally SolidWorks) with a working knowledge of plastics and light weight metal materials. A good understanding of Design for Manufacture / Assembly is also a strong desire of the client for this role.
  • The position will offer a suitable applicant the opportunity to develop and create products that quickly go to market and also be part of an NPD Programme that is focused on delivering a range of products on a regular basis with short lead times.
  • Good general mechanical engineering skills are also a must, along with the ability to communicate and project manage effectively with peers, internal departments and external suppliers.

Skills of a Product Design Engineer:

  • HNC/HND or above in an Engineering Discipline
  • 3 Years+ 3D CAD experience within a Design for Manufacture environment, assembly, part creation and creating drawings
  • Good exposure of Welded frames, Turned parts, CNC machined parts, Mould tool principles applied to GRP, Injection moulding techniques, Fabrication
  • Good Exposure of Designing products to meet Quality and Industry Standards
  • Material Selection and Bill of Materials experience
  • Good Project Engineering skills and knowledge of associated tools and software e.g. MS Word & Excel
  • Some good Creative Design Skills
  • Good ability to do detail drawings to Design Standards with Tolerance considerations.

This role will suit an engineer who is looking to get into a complete product life cycle project environment, with ownership and responsibility to deliver a programme on time and within short lead times.

A Midland based busy company with a current strong order book into 2021, are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer with ideally 8 - 10 years exposure of Material Handling moving Machinery Design, with the ability to use both 2D & 3D CAD.

The position will be part of a lively small project team that are responsible for designing and building one-off and bespoke material handling equipment that normally combines both static and moving part machinery and fabrications.

The right candidate will have had recent experience with sheet metal forming and fabrication, structural and machinery design and have a good working knowledge of incorporating motors and moving parts into designs.

Skills Required

  • 8 – 10 Years’ experience working within a materials handling or bespoke moving machinery background
  • A good understanding of mechanical principles and working to set engineering standards
  • A good knowledge of manufacturing and assembly techniques with different materials, particularly folded, welded and punched sheet steel.
  • A good appreciation of electrical and controls systems within automation to enable collaboration with specialists in these fields (No electrical circuit or control system design is expected from the candidate).
  • Some good project engineering ability and good exposure of taking projects from concept through to production.
  • Good working experience of Design Quality and Bill of Materials and Design Changes

MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER (GRADUATE / JUNIOR)

We are working with an engineering consultancy who are tasked to create a range of products for a myriad of industry sectors across the globe. Their products are designed, developed and tested to meet tough quality and reliability standards and to their own (ISO) in-house standards as well.

The company are looking to expand their team with a Junior Mechanical Designer, ideally someone who has recently graduated or completed an apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering and has good exposure of a 3D CAD package with some experience of designing and modelling components, fabrications, and machine parts.

The role will be part of a small team and each project will often involve the complete design, test and prototype of a product, prior to being released for manufacture.

The right candidate will have a strong interest in mechanical design engineering, with the ability to calculate and problem solve mechanical issues. The position is best suited to someone who also has spent sometime in industry using 3D CAD, either as a placement year or time served.

Key Responsibilities (but not limited to):

  • Provide a prompt and accurate response to technical enquires from all sources.
  • Confidently communicate technical information via telephone, email or other format satisfying customer requirements.
  • Receive and co-ordinate an appropriate response to MQL (Marketing Qualified Lead) enquiries, including technical advice, feasibility solutions and/or summarising of information for further processing.

Person Specification:

  • BEng or MEng degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering (or similar).
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively through various formats including telephone and email.
  • Capacity to assess design drawings and technical reports to extract the required parameters to provide support and/or produce a design.
  • Previous experience working within an office environment and/or within the civil engineering sector would be advantageous.
  • Capable of prioritizing own workload demonstrating flexibility and agility in a rapidly changing environment, ability to work on own initiative and plan own workload effectively. High level of computer literacy, use of design software, Microsoft office, CRM systems etc.

  • The successful candidate should be a Civil/Geotechnical Engineer with 5 years’ experience of geotechnical design work.
