AUTOMOTIVE PROJECT ENGINEER

The Product Engineer will be primarily responsible to the Project Team to assure total support and management of the program within the functional area of Product Engineering. Secondarily responsibility to the functional (Product Engineering) department to observe all policies and procedures for that functional area to participate in the continuous improvement of systems and processes.

Salary: £45,000 - £55,000, negotiable, dependant on experience

Product Engineer Candidate Requirements

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

Degree Qualified in an Engineering, Product or Industrial Design field.
Specific Engineering applications and minimum 5 years in Cockpit, Instrument panel and Console Engineering.
Detailed and diligent mind-set capable of working under their own initiative and driving excellence in others.
Experience working with UK OEM’s as a Tier 1 supplier in an engineering function.
Possess good written and oral communication skills.
Ability to effectively conduct group presentations.
Dedication to continuous learning is critical for this position.
Strong Microsoft Office skills.
Proficient in Catia V5 or other industry standard software with the ability to create, interrogate and communicate geometry requirements is preferable but not mandatory.

Product Engineer Key Responsibilities (but not limited to)

  • Product Definition
  • Coordinates and follows product engineering responsibilities from design concept, through Prototype build, pilot, production, and life of the program.
  • Provide feasibility input to support Studio Design & Package Requirements.
  • Champion, support and participate in Design and Engineering Reviews. Create and maintain a Master Section Package for the Commodity.
  • Work with advance engineering, styling and the company’s technical centre on development of the Concept and feasibility of components and vehicle level integration.
  • Work with and direct the CAD team to ensure all engineering parameters and customer requirements are being fulfilled on a timely basis.
  • Develop the DFMEA, DFM and other engineering disciplines if specified by the customer.
  • Organise and develop Design concepts, product architecture and set internal Engineering specifications.
  • Utilize and apply GD&T.

Product Validation

  • Develop DVP&R, obtaining customer approval, and initiating all laboratory and virtual tests.
  • Administer and over check Simulated product tests (CAE) and later physical tests in compliance with the DVP&R and assess the product design in line with internal and customer requirements reporting all findings internally and to the customer.
  • Ensure that the product design complies with all product requirements and any international Legal standards when applicable.
  • Ensure that the product meets all engineering objectives and targets for weight, acoustics, water sealing, cost, service etc.

Lead Mechanical Development Engineer Key Responsibilities (this job description is not exhaustive; a full role description will be sent to you)

  • The Lead Mechanical Development Engineer will technically lead new product development projects from the feasibility phase through to implementation in production.
  • Work closely with other departments (Production, Production Engineering, Test and Validation, Purchasing, Quality, Product Management) during the new product development process to maximise the potential of new products with respect to design for manufacture and assembly, cost, performance, quality and reliability.
  • Preparation of manufacturing drawings and BOM’s using SolidWorks CAD and PLM software. When required, technically assess and implement design change requests related to the full product range.
  • Work closely with and technically support other departments and suppliers to improve existing designs with respect to manufacturability and assembly. 
  • Provide technical assistance to other departments and suppliers to help solve technical problems during manufacture and assembly.

Research and Development Candidate Requirements (but not limited to)

Research and Development Technician Key Responsibilities (this job description is not exhaustive; a full role description will be sent to you)

Provide support to the R&D department, including:

  • Receive and organise parts/design data including components by maintaining build records and logs of engineering models and prototypes 
  • Organising and collaborating with Production for build processes such as brazing and welding.
  • Work closely with Production Engineering, subcontractors and suppliers when necessary.
  • Occasionally inspect parts and/or work with Goods In department to ensure parts are correct to drawing.
  • Assemble components, engineering models and prototype meters.

The Research and Development Technician will take ownership of the R&D lab:

  • Specifying and proposing lab equipment to fulfill requirements of testing when necessary in cooperation with R&D Engineers

  • Assist with maintaining the stock and safe storage of hazardous materials. Work in cooperation with the HSE department. (e.g. Keep a record of all hazardous materials being stored with associated COSHH and MSDS documents)

Design Engineer – Duties 

  • Product design and continuous improvement of products to suit both internal and external manufacturing processes.  
  • Ensuring designs embody objectives which add value to both internal and external stakeholders 
  • Support colleagues through product lifecycle from concept to launch including ideas, design brief, concept, prototype, feasibility, detail design, validation, launch, and ongoing improvements until discontinuation.
  • Generate manufacturing drawings and BoMs adhering to internal drawing standards.

  • Bachelor’s degree / HND in Mechanical Engineering
  • Proficient in use of AutoCAD and SolidWorks within EPDM in creating models, assemblies and drawings.
  • Experience of component and assembly design for manufacture. Including but not limited to, sheet metal and fabrication design.
  • Previous experience with product design within the HVAC industry. 
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel for data interrogation and analysis of BoMs.
  • Experience of using Infoflo MRP system to update BoM’s.
