Trainee Application Engineer Role Overview

On behalf of our client, we are looking to recruit an enthusiastic individual to train towards and develop in the role of Application Engineer.  In this exciting and varied role, you will learn to provide hands-on support and assistance to their customers, ensuring their product meets performance and application expectations.

  • As the majority of your time will be on-site at customer’s manufacturing facilities you must be willing to undertake extensive national and international travel (up to 60% of your time), often at short notice.  

Candidate Requirements

  • The Trainee Application Engineer will be educated to a minimum of HNC level, or equivalent, in a mechanical/electrical engineering discipline and ideally, you will be time-served. 
  • It would be advantageous to have knowledge of 2D AutoCAD.  
  • You will possess excellent computer skills (i.e. MS Office) and will have a strong health & safety ideology.
  • As the majority of your time will be on-site at customer’s manufacturing facilities you must be willing to undertake extensive national and international travel (up to 60% of your time), often at short notice.  
  • You will not be phased at the prospect of conveying complex, technical information in an easy-to-understand way and to be able to persuade others to your way of thinking.  
  • Adept at dealing with all levels within an organisation, from production line employees to Director level.  You will also be comfortable with report writing, being able to concisely and accurately make your point in a logical and understandable way.

Key Responsibilities

  • You will shadow the existing Application Engineers to learn all about the role, to the point of eventually taking sole responsibility for tasks and projects associated with the job.
  • You will travel to customer manufacturing plants to undertake line audits prior to installation of new equipment and also during trial runs and first-off production runs. 
  • Develop your knowledge to become a knowledge guru, providing troubleshooting support, line efficiency recommendations, fault-finding expertise and operator training.  
  • Involved with technically skilled colleagues, making recommendations for new projects based on drawings, product capabilities and application line capabilities.  

In short, you will become one of the company’s representatives at the customer’s site, promoting their services through the effective and efficient application of your skill and expertise.

Development Technician Duties

  • Capable of developing and testing broad range of products, (the focus being on Electrical and Electronic Componentry) 
  • Capable of conducting bench work fault finding procedures down to PCB board level. 
  • Develop solutions in conjunction with the project team and Design Engineers, (electronic upgrades and solutions to existing models)
  • Interpret technical problem reports and identify faults and issues in a speedily manner. 
  • Develop new products in line with best practice and a number of National / International Standards.

Development Technician Requirements

  • A formal qualification in engineering - Degree / HND / HNC, ideally Electronic or Mechanical biased
  • Some recent relevant industry experience in dealing with Electronic Hardware 
  • Ability to work effectively on their own or part of a project team.
  • Possess good analytical skills and be proficient in Microsoft applications, Word, Excel.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to prioritise their workload and meet deadlines.

MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER

Our world-leading client is looking for a Design Engineer, inside IR35. The initial assignment duration is 6 months with the possibility of extension.

This is a hybrid role, meaning you will be expected to work on site at Milton Keynes one day per week and will be working from home the rest of the time.

Mechanical Design Engineer Candidate Requirements

  • Creo CAD modelling (solid/surface) & design in context expertise essential, with an understanding of fundamental mechanical design.
  • Must be driven, a self-starter.
  • Degree in relevant engineering discipline with a minimum 2-years relevant experience is required.
  • Experience with plastic injection moulding / casting / fabrication design is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of fundamental mechanical design (DFM, DFA, static/dynamic loading, structural mechanics).
  • Expertise in selection of mechanical components, suitable materials & joining technologies to meet system requirements.
  • Experience following product development cycles & delivery of mechanical designs for key design gateways.
  • Ability to apply fundamental engineering principles from concept through to detail design.
  • Understanding of Geometric dimensioning & tolerancing leading to robust DFM & location strategies that aligns with Lean Manufacturing principles.

Mechanical Design Engineer Key Responsibilities (but not limited to)

  • This person will be responsible to deliver the design of components within the Mounting Systems commodity group for a commercial battery application.
  • Ensure a robust design and compatibility with other sub-systems and components (concept, design, quality, selection of right material and components and design for manufacturing).
  • Responsible for the specification, design & drawings of mechanical elements of their components.
  • The role will require an understanding of physical, informational, electrical & material interactions between components.
  • Deliver component requirements & meet quantitative targets (weight, cost, size) while ensuring a robust design that is right first time.
  • Ensure DFMEA, Engineering Specifications, Standards, Design Rules & Guidelines, Requirements, Statement of Work process/documents are effectively implemented in the design condition at the appropriate design maturity gateways.
  • Meet commodity timing plans to ensure the design team is able to deliver to critical program milestones.
  • Identify key mechanical failure modes & validation workstreams in order to capture these.
  • Lead issue resolution for mechanical component failures throughout validation.
  • Support Lead Engineers & Commodity owners with suppliers reviews through design phases, procurement of prototypes and production tooling development system multi-physics FEA models beneficial (static & dynamic).

Design Engineer Role Function

The Design Engineer will create new products and take responsibility from inception to final design within an agreed timeline. You will meet customer and sales expectations through customizing existing products and components to their new product requirements within short deadlines.

Candidate Specification

  • A proven Design Engineer, who is self-motivated and self-managing, with the ability to work autonomously.
  • Essentially, you will have proven experience of designing from concept to final product.
  • Simulation and Testing experience would be highly advantageous.
  • At least five years’ experience in a product development role with plastic and rubber mouldings – ideally.
  • Experience in metal work fabrication, and in sealing technologies to prevent the ingress of water and dust.
  • HNC/HND qualified.
  • Experience in 3D CAD, PTC Creo experience would be an advantage, but is not essential, other 3D proficiencies will be accepted.
  • Works well to deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

  • The Design Engineer will manage projects to improve performance and reliability of present and future products, covering the concept, specification, tender and development of new products or components
  • Design the aesthetics, materials and functionality of new products
  • Use Creo CAD system to design and visualise projects create 2D drawings to enable procurement of tooling and components
  • Create photo realistic images from 3D models and assembly’s for customer visualisation
  • Undertake model making, prototyping and product testing
  • Communicate effectively with customers, colleagues and vendors involved in a project, liaise with customers to identify their requirements

DESIGN ENGINEER

This is largely a remote working role. You will be required onsite at Milton Keynes, once every two weeks.

Design Engineer Candidate Requirements

  • Degree in relevant engineering discipline with a minimum 5 years relevant experience.
  • CAD design experience (CATIA, Creo, or NX).
  • Working experience with Battery Systems / Electrification.
  • Understanding of fundamental design principles & toolsets (DFM, DFA, DFMEA, design in context).
  • The Design Engineer will have familiarity with product design life cycle management (PLM) - particularly in concept development.

Useful, but not Essential Experience

  • Knowledge of Problem Resolution Techniques (e.g. - 8D, Six Sigma).
  • Windchill/Creo PTC experience (training can be provided on specific setup).

Design Engineer Key Responsibilities (but not limited to)

  • Develops fit-for-purpose concepts for battery products and provides technical advice for RFI/RFQ activities for the technical function.
  • Supports product planning support and provides technical input for future roadmaps and technology development plans.
  • Supports cross-program strategic continuity of design.
  • Understands and employs the fundamentals of mechanical, thermal and electrical battery design.
  • The Design Engineer will run fit-for-purpose battery attribute analysis and apply knowledge & application of analytical tools.
  • Apply processes, such as Engineering Standard Work (ESW), iDFMEA, Failure Incident Review Group (FIRG) and tools such as 7-step problem-solving to enable high quality decision-making in concept development.

The role of Maintenance Electrician will be very varied where you will undertake planned and preventative Maintenance of the manufacturing equipment.
