One of the most prestigious automotive manufacturers in the UK is looking to add a number of Project and Systems Engineers to its bespoke vehicle team. 

The position will be part of the vehicle innovation team, who are tasked with the remit to improve the driving and user experience to meet the bespoke needs of their customers.

The Project Engineer Purpose:

  • Offering a bespoke client experience through innovation and the delivery of content and features that support the expectations of what a customised and bespoke vehicle should be. 
  • Working as a Project Engineer the role will be responsible for the management and the delivery of component and system development activities across the relevant multi-departmental process-chain, to ensure on time introduction and integration into Bespoke Vehicle Project content. 
  • The position is responsible for project planning and delivery engineering activities to the required detail in support of the tasks assigned by the Lead Engineer.
  • Key accountabilities / experience required includes:
  • Engineering activities will include. 
  • Researching initial Concepts, Engineering Costing, Engineering Design, Risk Analysis, Centre of Competence Alignment, Test Planning & Validation, Project Planning and on-time Release of product parameters (product properties & function, costs, weight, quality, timing) as defined by feature sheets assigned by the Lead Engineer.

Additional responsibilities can include:

  • To lead the design & development of bespoke components including the generation of Bill of Material, Specification documents, checking of CAD Data & wiring drawings and prepare information for Engineering System Release
  • To communicate with Series engineering stakeholders to agree the required Legal, Safety & group requirements the component or feature must adhere to & ensure the component designs are integrated within the series product packaging
  • To lead the Simultaneous Engineering Team for a commodity, conduct project management activities within the team of stakeholders from other functions and mediate any conflicts within the process chain.
  • Creation & maintenance of the necessary risk analysis steps, including Risk filters, DFMEAs, and ensure associated Legal, Safety & Group standard requirements are brought into DVPs, Specifications, and other engineering documents
  • To ensure requirements required for manufacture are implemented into the design and associated documents
  • To determine the required quality requirements from an engineering perspective working with design & quality functions
  • To validate the product to all homologation/Legal Regulation requirements before preparing information for Engineering Release.

Position Requirements 

  • Be familiar with Software and/or Hardware design & manufacturing processes, including schematics
  • Electronics Laboratory skills, including use of scopes, signal generators, Vector CAN tool set
  • Familiar with Automotive Software development processes & Functional Modelling techniques
  • Complex Problem Investigation techniques, Problem Resolution & Reporting,
  • Knowledge of working closely with Suppliers & managing the supplier to deliver to plan.
  • Degree in Automotive/Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Sufficient experience in an Automotive Engineering development environment (Electrical)
  • Knowledge of Automotive Manufacturing End of Line and Configuration Processes
  • Experience in automotive engineering project engineering and leading cross-functional teams (without man-management responsibility)
  • Knowledge of international automotive legislation and homologation requirements

DUTIES OF PROJECT ENGINEER

  • Management and delivery of component and system development activities
  • Project planning and delivery of engineering activities
  • Researching initial concepts, engineering costing, Engineering design, Risk analysis, Test planning and Validation, Project planning and on-time Release
  • Electronic laboratory skills
  • Lead the design and development of bespoke components including B.O.M’s and checking CAD data and wiring / pinning drawings
  • Financially evaluate bespoke features for engineering relevant budget costs including Make-Or-Buy, Testing, Engineering Manpower, development materials

  • Determine Quality requirements
  • Validate the product to all homologation / Legal regulation requirements

REQUIREMENT OF THE PROJECT ENGINEER

  • Engineering Degree or equivalent In Electrical or Electronic Engineering
  • Product development and validation experience, electrical knowledge essential
  • People management, with coaching and development skills
  • Experience of milestone product development processes / gateway processes
  • A passion for development

The Role

  • This position would suit a proven Project Manager, who ideally has some Construction exposure.
  • Reporting to the Contracts Manager, you will undertake any reasonable requests required within the role.
  • Managing and coordinating projects and timetables within client’s contracts. Department to ensure all objectives are met safely within timescale, current legislation and budget.

Project Manager Person Specification

  • An understanding of H&S requirements for construction would be highly advantageous.

Project Manager Key Responsibilities

  • Liaising with the sales team to conduct the sales-contracts handover defining scope and objectives of each project.
  • Liaising with the client to arrange and undertake a pre-start meeting to ensure that scope and objectives are agreed.
  • Preparation and issuing a contract programme for agreement with all interested parties.
  • Ensure the Risk Assessments and Method Statements are compiled and issued to the client prior to commencing site activities.
  • Ensure site packs are compiled with all relevant LOLER, PUWER inspections present, and are compiled with all relevant drawings and specifications for the project.
  • Allocating the correct qualified labour resource to each managed project
  • Ensuring all materials are called off at the correct time and delivery instructions are correct.

Project Planning Engineer Salary and Hours

  • Review stock levels to ensure long lead items are available.
  • Ensure all targets are met - including safety, quality & delivery.
  • The Project Planning Engineer will carry out continuous improvements projects and assist in driving quality.
  • Continuously Monitor Production to resolve issues, identifying root cause and close loop to stop recurrences.

The Role

The Project Engineer will identify the technical challenges of various projects and derive appropriate solutions, coupled with the necessary organisational skills to lead projects within the allocated timescale and budget. This is a detailed Engineering calculations role with some project leadership.

Project Engineer Person Specification

  • Any experience of rotating equipment projects/industry would be highly advantageous.
  • Qualified to either Bachelor or Master’s degree level in an engineering discipline with significant mechanical engineering content.
  • Experience in technical design and CAD, with the ability to produce 3D CAD conceptual designs and 2D sketches
  • Initiative-taking and enthusiastic, with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Possessing excellent levels of detail and accuracy, and able to shoulder responsibility
  • Microsoft packages, to include Excel, PowerPoint, and Project, to an intermediate standard. Experience of technical software packages would be desirable e.g., FEA & rotor dynamics

Project Engineer Key Responsibilities

  • Identify technical risks at the earliest opportunity and implement cost-effective solutions.
  • Work with the engineering team to brainstorm and review potential engineering solutions. Proactively consult with other internal departments and teams as required.
  • The Project Engineer will take ownership of multiple engineering projects with active involvement in a wide range of products.
  • Provide technical liaison from inception to realisation in the specification and / or design, development, and commissioning of customer and / or internal projects.
  • Diagnose faults and rectify to validate products to a high quality.
  • Ensuring designs meet all legislative requirements necessary and comply with company quality procedures.
  • Produce specifications, test documentation and instructions to accurate exacting standards and assist with commissioning products as required.
