Job Description

An independent sub-contract machine shop in the Oxfordshire is looking to recruit a CNC Programmer – mill/turn. This clients work includes small batch work, one offs on various small to medium components from aerospace to automotive. This is a permanent position offering a good working environment and the opportunity to work within a strong and friendly team in a thriving and successful business.

Role and responsibilities

  • Programming, Setting & Operating CNC Mill/Turn machines 
  • Small to medium batch work Working to typical tolerances of +/- .001" (0.025mm) and occasional tolerances of +/- .0005" (0.0125 mm) 
  • You will be part of a great team, working within a modern and clean environment, producing high precision parts and components for aerospace and automotive industries
  • The nature of the work is small to medium batch with medium to high complexity
  • You will be machining to a very high standard

CNC Programmer Knowledge/ Experience Required

  • Working on a Mazak 400, using Fanuc controls
  • Experience within a manufacturing environment.  
  • Apprentice trained with at least 5 years’ experience

Hours and Salary

  • Monday to Thursday - working from 8.00 am to 4.30 pm (30 mins for lunch)

  • Standard rate - £17 per hour 
  • Overtime payable at x 1.5 hourly rate (days)

The salary and the working pattern for this role as a Laser/press operator are as follows:

  • Salary - £31,000 – including shift allowance
  • Working pattern - 3 weekly rotating shifts of days – 6am to 2pm, afternoons – 2pm to 10pm, and nights – 10pm to 6am

The experience required for this role as a Laser Operator & Press operator will be as follows:

  • To operate 5 axis and flatbed laser machines to process stainless steel & mild steel sheet or pressed components.
  • Previous experience in setting and operating CNC Laser Machines is essential.
  • The role will also include operation of Hydraulic & Mechanical Power Presses as & when required.

The skills required for this role as a Laser Operator & Press operator are as follows:

  • Conversant with operation and minor program modifications to 5 Axis and Flatbed Laser Machines.
  • Capable of carrying out basic daily/weekly maintenance of Laser Machines to ensure correct operation.
  • Ability to read and work from Engineering/CAD drawings at a basic/intermediate level.
  • Inspecting finished components against sample and drawings at defined frequencies.
  • Ensure accurate completion of all job activities including all associated administrative duties.
  • Ability to use precision measuring equipment such as vernier callipers.
  • Capable of identifying plant and equipment faults and reporting them to the Team Leader.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all Health & Safety Policies are adhered to.
  • Capable of maintaining good housekeeping in the process, particularly own work area.
  • Capable of working as part of a team to achieve deadlines.
  • Capable of transferring to other work within the manufacturing process, including operating production equipment and power presses.

Overview for this Press Brake Setter / Operators role:

We are recruiting for an experienced press brake operator/setter position, whereby the operator needs to be comfortable setting the press brake, performing daily safety checks, understanding of the machine for operational and safety aspect is a must. Current presses operating 3x 3 Meter and 1x 4 Meter press.

The operator must be able to read technical drawings to produce the companies bespoke products. Whilst technical drawings are provided you will be expected to use your technical experience to ensure when setting your programme any issues you may come across will be dealt with and raised accordingly. Power press trained preferred but not essential. General understanding of fabrication is required.

Responsibilities and duties for this Press Brake Setter / Operators role:

  • Always follow all Health & Safety rules in the workplace, without fail. This means behaving in accordance with the company Health & Safety guidelines.
  • Ensure your press is in good working order before and after working shift.    
  • Ensure all work activities are geared towards achieving collective Operational KPI`s.
  • Ensure adherence to ISO: 9001, taking responsibility that quality checks are being done and that record-keeping within Prodsmart is maintained.
  • Support a 5S approach, ensuring your area is tidy and organised including a daily audit of your working area at the start / end of the shift.
  • To have basic knowledge and experience of working with the grades of steel used in Company fabrications (predominately Grade 304 with some DX51D & Grade 316).
  • Report any machine issues to Management as and when they arise.

Product Design Engineer Purpose 

  • The position will report into the Head of Design and support New Design Product Development exercises. The role will be responsible for delivering high level performance driven products from concept through to production.
  • Working from initial briefs, dealing with all the gateways and phases along the way to ensure time, cost and deadline are met. 
  • Integrate new technologies in new product development projects.

  • A strong proven background in the complete / whole product design and development of Electronic / Consumer Goods or similar.
  • Preferable experience in electro-mechanical consumer products, with strong design for plastics and design for manufacture experience.
  • Strong visual communication of concepts and ideas via traditional and digital sketching/drawing ability 
  • Experienced user of 3D CAD Solidworks, CREO, NX, CATIA etc
  • Good working knowledge of manufacturing processes and techniques
  • Skilled in prototyping and producing product mock-ups

The Electronic Engineer position will report to the Head of Engineering and will be the sole Electronic biased Engineer within a team of Product Design and Prototype Engineers.

Duties will include

  • The creation and development of battery management systems
  • Ensuring battery management systems meet regulatory and company requirements for safety
  • Charger design and writing detailed charger specifications
  • Power Converter Design.
  • Ensuring designs can comply with relevant EMC/EMI standards and modifying design where needed to ensure this is the case.
  • Thermal management design of power electronics systems
  • Design of battery powered electronics to meet global requirements.
  • Research into new technology and investigating ways of incorporating this technology into future products.
  • Use of simulation and PCB design software to create prototypes.
  • Strong lab skills to build and test prototypes with minimal supervision.
  • Develop the concept, proving key technologies and demonstrating the system feasibility
  • Take technical responsibility for the battery management system and associated power electronics content of a project. This may expand to the responsibility for multiple small concurrent projects.
  • Demonstrate designs are safe, robust, cost effective and fit for purpose for a high-volume manufacture environment, through detailed laboratory testing, simulation and analysis

Electronic Engineer Requirements

  • Minimum BEng/MEng degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or other relevant discipline
  • Experience in the design of Battery Management Systems especially for Lithium-Ion technology.
  • Experience in motor inverter design and motor control, particularly brushless DC motors, servo or stepper motors desirable.
  • General knowledge of power electronic devices, including silicon based IGBTs, MOSFETs and wide bandgap technologies
  • Understanding of device characteristics and issues with switching behaviour in real circuits, as well as power switch driver design
  • Design of power electronics for both low voltage and mains voltage systems
  • Understanding of techniques for accurately monitoring small signals in high power, electrically noisy environments.
  • Excellent knowledge of analogue signal conditioning (e.g., op-amp circuit design) and ideally digital signal processing approaches
  • Schematic capture using Altium Designer, Mentor Graphics or other mainstream tools
  • Use of SPICE based simulation tools such as Simetrix and LTspice
  • Design calculation tools such as Mathcad, Matlab, Excel.
  • Circuit simulation and tolerance analysis
  • Robust design including FMEA techniques
  • Good quality engineering process understanding and appreciation
  • Design for high volume manufacture
  •  PCB layout – size/cost minimisation while achieving layouts for inherently good EMC compliance and thermal design.

This opportunity will be part of the full product life cycle of a project and will require visits to overseas suppliers and manufactures, to ensure the integrity of designs are maintained. This will allow complete project ownership from concept through to final release to retail.
