Head of Mechanical Design Role Function

  • Develop products and components to meet design specifications on time and on budget. You will be involved in hands-on designing and team leadership and coaching
  • Improve, manage and develop the mechanical design function, implementing new processes, techniques and technologies, to deliver more new products on time and to specification and to improve our integration into the wider company organisation

Candidate Specification

The Head of Mechanical Design will be responsible for both hands-on design, and coaching, leadership / getting the best out of the current design team.

  • Mechanical engineering qualifications e.g, mechanical engineering or suitable CAD design degree
  • Practical, hands-on experience of engineering products/components and working with the supply base to deliver products to specification and cost
  • 3D CAD knowledge and experience (preferably Pro-Engineer), other 3D proficiencies will be considered
  • Experience of using enhanced development tools such as finite element analysis (FEA) and mould flow
  • Project management skills and experience (preferably with project management qualifications)
  • Proven people management, leadership, coaching and getting the best out of people is essential
  • Knowledge and experience of concurrent engineering principles and processes. IT skills - Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.); Microsoft Project, with a high degree of literacy and numeracy

Key Responsibilities (this description in non-exhaustive, a full role description will be sent to you)

  • The Head of Mechanical Design will design and develop new products and components, principally using plastics and metal (i.e.: injection moulding, extruding, pressing, fabrication, etc.) ensuring mechanical fitness for purpose whilst taking into account manufacturability, cost constraints, material performance, tooling requirements, safety and environmental impact
  • Lead the engineering design team to in conjunction with the wider technical team and other departments (e.g.: Marketing, Manufacturing, Purchasing and Quality) to deliver effective solutions against a design specification
  • Model and simulate component designs as appropriate (e.g, mechanical FEA stress analysis, mould flow, rapid prototype, etc.) to ensure components meet the specifications and are right first time to minimise the development lead time and tooling costs
  • The Head of Mechanical Design will work with the Technical Director, Product Management and the Business Development Managers customers to understand requirements and develop appropriate solutions
  • Work with Purchasing, toolmakers and suppliers to ensure products and components are delivered to specification, on time and in budget
  • Work with the Operations team to design solutions that suit current to planned manufacturing methodologies
  • Control Bills of Materials to ensure accuracy of materials control processes and complete design drawings (e.g, 30 CAD), Bill of Materials and other design documentation as required by the business

Design Engineer Role Function

  • The Design Engineer will create new products and take responsibility from inception to final design within an agreed timeline.
  • To meet customer and sales expectations through customizing existing products and components to their new product requirements within short deadlines

Candidate Specification

  • A proven Design Engineer, who is self-motivated and self-managing, with the ability to work autonomously
  • At least five years’ experience in a product development role with plastic and rubber mouldings
  • Experience in metal work fabrication
  • Experience in sealing technologies to prevent the ingress of water and dust
  • HNC/HND qualified
  • Experience in 3D CAD, PTC Creo experience would be an advantage but not essential, other 3D proficiencies will be accepted
  • Works well to deadlines

Key Responsibilities

  • The Design Engineer will manage projects to improve performance and reliability of present and future products, covering the concept, specification, tender and development of new products or components
  • Design the aesthetics, materials and functionality of new products
  • Use Creo CAD system to design and visualise projects create 2D drawings to enable procurement of tooling and components
  • Create photo realistic images from 3D models and assembly’s for customer visualisation
  • Undertake model making, prototyping and product testing
  • Communicate effectively with customers, colleagues and vendors involved in a project, liaise with customers to identify their requirements
  • Plan effectively to ensure projects are delivered on time, to standard and to budget

This is an important position within the R&D team, the Electronics Engineer will be key in driving the development of new audio products from initial design, through to production and post-production maintenance.

Electronics Engineer Candidate Requirements

  • Degree qualified in Audio Electronics / Electronics Engineering or similar engineering subject.
  • 2+ years’ commercial experience in electronic design, ideally in audio electronics.
  • Audio experience working with ADC/DAC (Analogue/Digital Converters) and associated components, Op-amps etc.
  • High speed digital electronics experience, working with microcontrollers, DSPs etc.
  • PCB layout experience.
  • You must be a Guitar player.

Key Responsibilities (but not limited to)

  • The Electronics Engineer will be assisting with the design, input and modification of digital & analogue electronic schematics, with guidance from the Chief Engineer and wider team.
  • Undertaking the building and testing of electronic prototypes.
  • Advising and assisting with the sourcing of components for prototype production and testing.
  • Writing and performing new audio product tests, recording and presenting results.
  • Setting up test environments.
  • Brainstorming new product ideas and technical requirements/ specifications. Communicating with UK and overseas teams on project-specific topics.
  • The Electronics Engineer will be assisting other day-to day technical activities of the R&D department. Possible, infrequent overseas travel as required - this is not essential, however can be an exciting opportunity for an engineer to broaden their knowledge and experience

The Role

Due to further growth, a vacancy has arisen in the R&D department for a Mechanical Development Engineer with special responsibility for finite element simulation.

The position is intended as a junior role for applicants who typically have approximately 3 years post-graduate industrial experience, who can grow into the role and gain the required skills and knowledge from more experienced colleagues and additional training provided by the company.

Development Engineer Key Duties

  • Support the design and development of products by use of SolidWorks CAD software, ANSYS simulation software and other tools and techniques as required.
  • Conducting structural integrity calculations (based on formula and FEA), relating to pressure safety requirements and compliance with the Pressure Equipment Directive and other international pressure equipment regulations.

Development Engineer Key Skills Required

  • A minimum 2:1 degree in Mechanical Engineering or related subject from an IMechE accredited course.
  • Familiarity and preferably practical experience with core mechanical engineering theory including stress analysis, dynamics, thermodynamics and fluids.
  • Experience using Mathcad
  • Typically 3 years industrial experience in a technical Engineering role, preferably in new product development environment.
  • Preferable - experience in applying stress analysis techniques.
  • A minimum of 1 year’s practical experience using simulation software (preferably ANSYS) conducting stress, thermal and modal analyses and knowledge of ANSYS APDL and the Workbench environment would be advantageous

Systems Engineer – Requirements:

  • A formal qualification / Degree in a relevant science or Engineering disciplines. 
  • Experience of requirements analysis and management, preferably using dedicated requirements management tools (e.g., DOORS, Cradle, MKS).
  • Good experience of Configuration management Tools (e.g., MKS)

Duties of a Senior Hardware Engineer

  • Testing of the design once created in hardware.

Senior Hardware Engineer Requirements

  • Ideally Degree-qualified in (Electrical and Electronic Engineering). 
  • Good Experience of semiconductor technologies (up to 1200V). 
  • Good exposure of Power Conversion; Converter and Inverter (up to 300kW). 
  • Experience working with Infineon / NXP microprocessors (or similar). 
  • Experience with Altium Designer. 
  • Experience in the use of model-based development tools including Matlab, Simulink.
