Design Engineer Package, Benefits and Hours

  • Salary £30,000 - £37,500, negotiable dependent on experience
  • Excellent contractual benefits package to include a healthy contributory pension scheme, death in service, income protection benefits and health insurance, together with a non-contractual annual profit share bonus

  • 37 hours per week; Monday to Thursday 08:30am – 17:15pm, Fridays 08:30am – 12:30pm

The Role

The Design Engineer studies, researches, and develops ideas for new products and the methods used to make them. Working on a wide range of bespoke rotating machinery, that must be functional and reliable, easy, and safe to use, whilst ensuring the design is as cost effective and efficient as possible, including modifying existing products or processes to increase efficiency or improve performance.

Design Engineer Required Experience

  • A 2.1 degree or HND in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • 3D CAD / 2D CAD experience with Solidworks & PDM is strongly desired.
  • Proven experience in an Engineering Design Environment.
  • Rotating Machines / Machinery experience.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes such as machining and fabrication.
  • MRP System Experience.

Design Engineer Person Specification

  • A creative flair and design ability with strong visual and spatial awareness.
  • Very strong attention to detail with ability to spot potential errors.
  • Strong maths and IT skills.
  • Analytical, self-starter and multi-tasker with good team working mentality. 
  • Strong written and oral communication.

Design Engineer Key Responsibilities

  • Producing General Arrangement, Assembly and detailed manufacturing drawings and BOM.s on time, and to cost, in accordance with schedules and planning, and ensuring that designs are suitable for manufacture.
  • Change Management and Revision Control of Engineering Documents.
  • Checking and Releasing of Drawings.
  • Brainstorming design solutions. 
  • Conducting and documenting formal design reviews.

MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER

Our world-leading client is looking for a Design Engineer, inside IR35. The initial assignment duration is 6 months with the possibility of extension.

This is a hybrid role, meaning you will be expected to work on site at Milton Keynes one day per week and will be working from home the rest of the time.

Mechanical Design Engineer Candidate Requirements

  • Creo CAD modelling (solid/surface) & design in context expertise essential, with an understanding of fundamental mechanical design.

  • Experience with plastic injection moulding / casting / fabrication design is highly desirable.

  • Expertise in selection of mechanical components, suitable materials & joining technologies to meet system requirements.

  • Understanding of Geometric dimensioning & tolerancing leading to robust DFM & location strategies that aligns with Lean Manufacturing principles.

Mechanical Design Engineer Key Responsibilities (but not limited to)

  • This person will be responsible to deliver the design of components within the Mounting Systems commodity group for a commercial battery application.
  • Ensure a robust design and compatibility with other sub-systems and components (concept, design, quality, selection of right material and components and design for manufacturing).
  • Responsible for the specification, design & drawings of mechanical elements of their components.
  • The role will require an understanding of physical, informational, electrical & material interactions between components.
  • Deliver component requirements & meet quantitative targets (weight, cost, size) while ensuring a robust design that is right first time.
  • Ensure DFMEA, Engineering Specifications, Standards, Design Rules & Guidelines, Requirements, Statement of Work process/documents are effectively implemented in the design condition at the appropriate design maturity gateways.
  • Meet commodity timing plans to ensure the design team is able to deliver to critical program milestones.
  • Identify key mechanical failure modes & validation workstreams in order to capture these.
  • Lead issue resolution for mechanical component failures throughout validation.
  • Support Lead Engineers & Commodity owners with suppliers reviews through design phases, procurement of prototypes and production tooling development system multi-physics FEA models beneficial (static & dynamic).

Design Engineer Role Function

The Design Engineer will create new products and take responsibility from inception to final design within an agreed timeline. You will meet customer and sales expectations through customizing existing products and components to their new product requirements within short deadlines.

Candidate Specification

  • A proven Design Engineer, who is self-motivated and self-managing, with the ability to work autonomously.
  • Essentially, you will have proven experience of designing from concept to final product.
  • Simulation and Testing experience would be highly advantageous.
  • At least five years’ experience in a product development role with plastic and rubber mouldings – ideally.
  • Experience in metal work fabrication, and in sealing technologies to prevent the ingress of water and dust.
  • HNC/HND qualified.
  • Experience in 3D CAD, PTC Creo experience would be an advantage, but is not essential, other 3D proficiencies will be accepted.
  • Works well to deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

  • The Design Engineer will manage projects to improve performance and reliability of present and future products, covering the concept, specification, tender and development of new products or components
  • Design the aesthetics, materials and functionality of new products
  • Use Creo CAD system to design and visualise projects create 2D drawings to enable procurement of tooling and components
  • Create photo realistic images from 3D models and assembly’s for customer visualisation
  • Undertake model making, prototyping and product testing
  • Communicate effectively with customers, colleagues and vendors involved in a project, liaise with customers to identify their requirements

DESIGN ENGINEER

Our world-leading client is looking for a Design Engineer, inside IR35. The initial assignment duration is 6 months with the possibility of extension.

This is largely a remote working role. You will be required onsite at Milton Keynes, once every two weeks. 

Duration: 6 months, possibly longer
Pay: £29.00 - £31.00 per hour (this role is inside IR35)

Design Engineer Candidate Requirements

  • Degree in relevant engineering discipline with a minimum 5 years relevant experience.
  • CAD design experience (CATIA, Creo, or NX).
  • Working experience with Battery Systems / Electrification.
  • Understanding of fundamental design principles & toolsets (DFM, DFA, DFMEA, design in context).
  • The Design Engineer will have familiarity with product design life cycle management (PLM) - particularly in concept development.
  • Self-motivation, time management and proactive prioritisation essential.
  • Strong people skills and the ability to work with a wide range of individuals.

Useful, but not Essential Experience

  • Knowledge of Problem Resolution Techniques (e.g. - 8D, Six Sigma).
  • Windchill/Creo PTC experience (training can be provided on specific setup).

Design Engineer Key Responsibilities (but not limited to)

  • Develops fit-for-purpose concepts for battery products and provides technical advice for RFI/RFQ activities for the technical function.
  • Supports product planning support and provides technical input for future roadmaps and technology development plans.
  • Supports cross-program strategic continuity of design.
  • Understands and employs the fundamentals of mechanical, thermal and electrical battery design.
  • The Design Engineer will run fit-for-purpose battery attribute analysis and apply knowledge & application of analytical tools.
  • Apply processes, such as Engineering Standard Work (ESW), iDFMEA, Failure Incident Review Group (FIRG) and tools such as 7-step problem-solving to enable high quality decision-making in concept development.

MAINTENANCE ELECTRICIAN

I am looking to recruit a Maintenance Electrician role for a leading global organisation within the Manufacturing sector. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a team to provide breakdown cover and maintain machinery and Automation equipment.

The shifts for the Maintenance Electrician role are 4 on 4 off days and nights 6-6.

The Maintenance Electrician role will include and require you to have the following experience:

  • To provide shift breakdown cover on all machines, automation equipment and any ancillary equipment.
  • To provide PPM on machines, automation equipment and any ancillary equipment.
  • To work in an efficient and safe manner on breakdown repairs on all equipment
  • To support and implement progressive improvements of our existing manufacturing automation processes working with both internal and external resources

Works Supervisor Role Overview

Reporting to the Production Manager, the Workshop Supervisor will oversee approximately 50 staff, on a double day shift, consisting of Team Leader, Operators, Laborers and Apprentices.

Salary: £40,000 per annum

Candidate Requirements

  • The Works Supervisor will have proven experience of supervising or managing in an engineering / manufacturing environment.
  • Machining exposure, particularly grinding would be highly advantageous.
  • Willing and able to work double days shifts.
  • A good communicator, who is able to mentor and get the best out people. 

Works Supervisor Key Responsibilities (but not limited to)

  • Maximise ‘lights out’ machining to increase Productivity and record this in TEAMS.
  • Ensure prior to the end of shift, all applicable machines are set up to run lights out, ensuring the Production Priority database is updated with the latest plans and actions which can be shared by all colleagues.
  • Explore ways of increasing Productivity with further possible unmanned or multi manning and conduct trials to reduce stock allowance for grinding which will reduce machining times. Conduct machining trials using tooling representatives and experts in the field. 
  • Monitor and review operator production efficiencies against targets and carry out any actions where targets are not met with the assistance of the Production team.   • Use ANDON boards to assist in the monitoring of Productivity and educate operators in the importance of booking accuracy.
  • Expect multi manning wherever possible. Always question areas that are not and consider options of how to improve this.
  • The Works Supervisor will implement LEAN techniques including 6S throughout the works. Aim for continuous improvement in order to save time and money.
  • Ensure all completed work is moved onto the next operation by operators and not left in racks for others to move.
  • Regularly review and update the skills' matrix plan to Identify areas of weakness within work cells and operators to ensure we have a fully skilled and flexible workforce.
  • Attend daily factory tour and include team leaders for their input.
  • Update machine capabilities to assist in planning the production requirements.
  • Communicate plans and instructions to colleagues during shift change handover and supply daily email for reference and for others to continue with the required actions.
  • Use initiative to make decisions, challenge set plans and try out new ideas.
