Design Engineer Candidate Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering 
  • At least 3 years’ experience in heavy equipment / machinery design
  • Good 3D CAD skills (preferably Pro Engineer/CREO).
  • Experience of Finite Element Analysis is desirable
  • Experience / working knowledge of one or more of the following:-
  • Metallurgy
  • Welding
  • Casting Methods
  • Good presentation and interpersonal skills

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Lead Engineer, you will be responsible for the following; 

  • The Design Engineer will support the Group Quality Council process to identify and resolve problems raised at the root cause quickly and effectively and manage engineering change process.
  • Work with teams across models to produce full manufacturing specification package including Engineering BOMs and Drawings.
  • Follow Group standards in the areas of FMEA, DFM, prototype development and field testing, follow Group engineering standards and associated IT systems, to ensure effective global management of released engineering data.
  • The Design Engineer will reduce manufacturing cost through improved design and consultation with the production department, purchasing and suppliers.
  • Develop an expertise across the range of machines to provide support to the manufacturing business. 
  • Support NPPD teams as required with a range of tasks from detail drawings to the structural analysis and optimisation.
  • Ensure current products meet standards and performance levels specified for safety, function and reliability
  • Support the global after sales teams where technical input is required. Investigate and address Customer Complaints in a timely manner where identified / allocated by internal systems or engineering manager.

Candidate Specification

  • A mechanical/manufacturing engineering apprenticeship and/or recognised mechanical/manufacturing qualification at HNC level or above.
  • Previous 3D modelling experience using Solid Edge or similar software in a fast-moving manufacturing/engineering environment.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills as you will need to be in contact with customers from different cultures, by phone, email and occasionally in person.
  • Experience with CAM software and CNC machines would be useful.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Liaising with customers and agents to fully understand the customer requirements for the manufacture of their products, and the tooling/machinery used for this process.
  • Providing the technical input to the sales ordering process by liaising with the customer in ‘designing out’ any potential problems to produce an optimum product, at the highest quality and with trouble free production.

  • The successful applicant must be technically competent in a wide range of design/engineering skills and must have knowledge of new product development and product Introduction.

  • Proven Development Engineer, with Applications Engineering experience.
  • A 2.1 degree in Mechanical engineering with Aerospace/Automotive/Energy/Oil & Gas background together with 3 to 5 years of demonstrable experience in a similar role.

  • Maintain programmes throughout the NPI process. Be adept at drawing on internal knowledge as well as industry and/or academic resources in reaching testing conclusions.
  • Actively support test time reduction through Continuous Improvement principles and promote 5S principles within the test department.
