Are you a Design Engineer with a background in creating concept and front-end product designs for external or internal clients & have either a Product or Industrial Design Degree or equivalent, with three years post study commercial experience?

We currently have an opportunity to join a dynamic Southwest Midlands Design Team and to be responsible for creating a range of new innovative products for the Consumer markets, where the brief and remit will be biased towards style and user interaction.

We are looking for a Design Engineer with a background in creating concept and front-end product designs for external or internal clients who have either a Product or Industrial Design Degree or equivalent, with three years post study commercial experience.

We are looking to employ a mid-level Product Designer or Industrial Designer to join a creative successful team, where delivering performance driven consumer products to market is their primary focus. 

This is a fantastic opportunity for a Designer to demonstrate their creativity and get involved in exciting projects, seeing their work going from early concept stages through to production in a short period of time. 

Product Design Duties include:

  • Developing products from an initial brief through to prototype 
  • Investigating potential innovative technologies / techniques that could benefit future products
  • Design and develop new product concept ideas.
  • Provide aesthetic and user orientated design solutions to the specifications and requirements. 
  • High standard of design work, design control, robust design and design for manufacture on a daily basis.
  • Creating prototypes to prove out and develop new concepts and design solutions.
  • Testing products, components, prototypes, technologies, recording test results for review and action
  • Utilize CAD to produce development concepts and detailed design for hand over to manufacturing partner(s)
  • Assisting in transfer of product from development to manufacturing
  • Ensure that projects comply with current legislation, Health and Safety regulations, and strict compliance with R&D Reliability and Document Control best practice.

Product Designer Requirements:

  • The Product Design position requires a minimum qualification of a degree or equivalent in design and at least three years’ experience in a paid design post is essential.
  • The successful applicant must be technically competent in a wide range of design/engineering skills and must have knowledge of new product development and product Introduction. 

Key Skills:

  • Self-motivated and keen to strive to create great consumer products
  • Excellent inter-personal skills
  • Excellent visual communication of concepts and ideas via traditional and digital sketching/drawing ability 
  • A working knowledge of rendering packages such as Keyshot
  • Experienced user of 3D CAD Solidworks/CREO/NX/CATIA
  • Good Photoshop and Illustrator skills
  • Good working knowledge of manufacturing processes and techniques
  • Skilled in prototyping and producing product mock-ups
  • Competent user of MS windows, specifically Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Organisational, analytical, communications and interpersonal skills are all also a prerequisite of this position.

Design Engineer Candidate Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering 
  • At least 3 years’ experience in heavy equipment / machinery design
  • Good 3D CAD skills (preferably Pro Engineer/CREO).
  • Experience of Finite Element Analysis is desirable

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Lead Engineer, you will be responsible for the following; 

  • The Design Engineer will support the Group Quality Council process to identify and resolve problems raised at the root cause quickly and effectively and manage engineering change process.
  • Work with teams across models to produce full manufacturing specification package including Engineering BOMs and Drawings.
  • Follow Group standards in the areas of FMEA, DFM, prototype development and field testing, follow Group engineering standards and associated IT systems, to ensure effective global management of released engineering data.
  • The Design Engineer will reduce manufacturing cost through improved design and consultation with the production department, purchasing and suppliers.
  • Develop an expertise across the range of machines to provide support to the manufacturing business. 
  • Support NPPD teams as required with a range of tasks from detail drawings to the structural analysis and optimisation.
  • Ensure current products meet standards and performance levels specified for safety, function and reliability
  • Support the global after sales teams where technical input is required. Investigate and address Customer Complaints in a timely manner where identified / allocated by internal systems or engineering manager.

Development Technician Duties

  • Significant experience in a similar role in a manufacturing environment, ideally within pressings, assembly, fabrication, sheet metal or related industry.
  • A manufacturing engineering qualification to degree level (or equivalent experience) with production process design bias and a proven record of accomplishment of delivering results.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing systems techniques such as Lean, SMED, SPC, Process loading, PFMEA, 5S, Standard work, Poke Yoke, visual management, operator maintenance, Spaghetti diagrams, Yamazumi, single piece flow, no fault forward, kan-ban material control and VSM.
