Design Engineer 

Are you looking to get into the R&D of sustainable technology and material?

We have a great opportunity for a Design Engineer to join a busy and growing engineering team in the South Staffordshire area. 

The existing team are currently working on a range of projects and each of their projects are worked on a bespoke basis, from concept and approval, through to final release for manufacture.  

  • £30,000 - £33,000 
  • Pension

The Design Engineer will be part of a small team of designers who will often work independently on individual projects for customers across the globe. 

The projects will vary but will often require design for manufacture and the creation of design modifications and changes to meet the customers design, cost or purpose demands. 

All work will be carried out using 3D CAD (Solidworks) and the position will need the CAD expertise to carry out 3D modelling and assembly drawings on a daily basis. 

Project update and presentations with internal and sometimes external managers and customers will be a regular part of the role, along with strong communication with the company’s internal manufacturing and production teams. 

The position will also be part of the company’s design capability growth plans, for future offerings to customers, so mentoring, personal development and technology update training will also be a regular part of the role. 

The right applicant for the Design Engineer will be:

  • Degree qualified in either Product or Mechanical Design 
  • Strong 3D CAD skills – (Solidworks)
  • Good exposure of Design for Manufacture principles 
  • Good exposure of Fabrications
  • Strong Communication skills 
  • Good Project Engineering abilities 
  • 2 – 3 Years Industry experience

Duties of a Systems Engineer 

  • The analysis of customer requirements, functional safety requirements, relevant legislation and standards to develop system requirement specifications. 
  • The use of proven system analysis and design methodologies to develop elegant efficient solutions to meet the project requirements. 
  • Working closely with the Functional Safety Department to ensure the analysis and development of appropriate functional safety requirements. 
  • Liaison with other engineering disciplines to develop system design specifications and algorithms. 
  • Plan, conduct and review testing of new software, hardware and calibrations at a variety of levels including integration testing, dyno testing and vehicle level testing, sometimes including worldwide field trips. 
  • The calibration of system functions to comply with project requirements. Complete sign-off procedures for vehicle algorithms, calibrations and final product testing. Undertake system and vehicle development and problem-solving within tight timescales. 
  • Fully document the design development and verification of developed systems. 
  • Understand and comply with company and customer confidentiality agreements and maintain the security of company and customer property. 

Systems Engineer – Requirements:

  • A formal qualification / Degree in a relevant science or Engineering disciplines. 
  • Experience of requirements analysis and management, preferably using dedicated requirements management tools (e.g., DOORS, Cradle, MKS).
  • Good experience of Configuration management Tools (e.g., MKS) 
  • Experience of systems design methodologies 
  • Hands on experience of developing control algorithms for automotive applications 
  • Knowledge or familiarity of, Software C-code, MATLAB, CAN and flexray communication protocols and toolchain. 
  • A good understanding of electronic hardware techniques and an ability to interpret circuit schematics. 
  • Knowledge of the use of microcontrollers within real time embedded systems 
  • Proficiency with standard office tools: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.

Reporting to the Head of Department the role will become an important part of the Chassis Group, where the role will be responsible for developing and designing software for high performance embedded systems.

Duties of a Software Engineer will include:

Dealing with embedded software for microcontrollers, using design practices and software life cycles in line with the ISO2001:2008 quality system and high integrity design standards. Providing close coordination of project activities throughout the duration of the project between both the development teams and the customer. 

  • The interpretation of system requirements in collaboration with systems and hardware engineers to generate software requirements using semi-formal methods. 
  • Develop Code implementation using C/C++ programming languages, assembly language and automatic code generation from modelled environments. 
  • Undertake functional components, base software development and problem-solving within tight timescales 
  • The use of Autosar BSW configuration and integration 
  • The generation and execution of test plans and reports at all levels of the “V” life cycle, including unit/structural tests, integration tests and verification/validation tests 
  • The generation and formal review of technical documentation and artefacts from the design process 
  • Work to FMEA, HAZOP, FTA and other analysis techniques. 

What we are looking for in a Software Engineer

  • A formal qualification in engineering, or a science-based subject (Ideally Software or Electronic Engineering related)
  • Good industry experience in a similar role within an embedded system product development environment 
  • Good experience of programming using C, C++, C# and assembly languages 
  • Experience working with Autosar Base Software, Rte and SWC configuration 
  • Experience of using requirements management and specification tools e.g., DOORS, MKS Integrity 
  • Experience using configuration management tools e.g., MKS
  • Experience with software analysis methodologies and tools e.g., UML, Rhapsody
  • Experience with CAN based test tools e.g., CANoe, CANalyser, CANape, PCAN or ValueCAN
  • An ability to interpret circuit schematics and understand the basic operation of electronics hardware, especially microprocessor peripheral support circuitry
  • A good proficiency with standard office tools: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc

Duties of a Senior Hardware Engineer 

This position reports directly to the Chief Hardware Engineer and includes the following primary duties: 

  • Design of new, or update to existing, Automotive products (typically inverters / converters for hybrid and electric vehicles). 
  • Liaising with the Systems, Control and Software teams to ensure an optimum solution. 
  • Testing of the design once created in hardware. 
  • Supporting the Programme team with new project acquisition by providing technical assessment and time estimates. 

Senior Hardware Engineer Requirements

  • Ideally Degree-qualified in (Electrical and Electronic Engineering). 
  • Good Experience of semiconductor technologies (up to 1200V). 
  • Good exposure of Power Conversion; Converter and Inverter (up to 300kW). 
  • Experience working with Infineon / NXP microprocessors (or similar). 
  • Experience with Altium Designer. 
  • Experience in the use of model-based development tools including Matlab, Simulink. 
  • Experience in the use of electrical simulation tools; Simetrix, Simplis, Spice, etc. 
  • Knowledge of applicable ISO standards. 
  • Ideally some knowledge of designing for safety critical systems. 
  • Ideally some knowledge of EMC best practice design.
