DESIGN ENGINEER

Our world-leading client is looking for a Design Engineer, inside IR35. The initial assignment duration is 6 months with the possibility of extension.

This is largely a remote working role. You will be required onsite at Milton Keynes, once every two weeks. 

Duration: 6 months, possibly longer
Pay: £29.00 - £31.00 per hour (this role is inside IR35)

Design Engineer Candidate Requirements

  • Degree in relevant engineering discipline with a minimum 5 years relevant experience.
  • CAD design experience (CATIA, Creo, or NX).
  • Working experience with Battery Systems / Electrification.
  • Understanding of fundamental design principles & toolsets (DFM, DFA, DFMEA, design in context).
  • The Design Engineer will have familiarity with product design life cycle management (PLM) - particularly in concept development.
  • Self-motivation, time management and proactive prioritisation essential.
  • Strong people skills and the ability to work with a wide range of individuals.

Useful, but not Essential Experience

  • Knowledge of Problem Resolution Techniques (e.g. - 8D, Six Sigma).
  • Windchill/Creo PTC experience (training can be provided on specific setup).

Design Engineer Key Responsibilities (but not limited to)

  • Develops fit-for-purpose concepts for battery products and provides technical advice for RFI/RFQ activities for the technical function.
  • Supports product planning support and provides technical input for future roadmaps and technology development plans.
  • Supports cross-program strategic continuity of design.
  • Understands and employs the fundamentals of mechanical, thermal and electrical battery design.
  • The Design Engineer will run fit-for-purpose battery attribute analysis and apply knowledge & application of analytical tools.

Mechanical Design Engineer Candidate Requirements

Mechanical Design Engineer Key Responsibilities (but not limited to)

  • This person will be responsible to deliver the design of components within the Mounting Systems commodity group for a commercial battery application.
  • Ensure a robust design and compatibility with other sub-systems and components (concept, design, quality, selection of right material and components and design for manufacturing).
  • Responsible for the specification, design & drawings of mechanical elements of their components.
  • The role will require an understanding of physical, informational, electrical & material interactions between components.
  • Deliver component requirements & meet quantitative targets (weight, cost, size) while ensuring a robust design that is right first time.
  • Ensure DFMEA, Engineering Specifications, Standards, Design Rules & Guidelines, Requirements, Statement of Work process/documents are effectively implemented in the design condition at the appropriate design maturity gateways.
  • Meet commodity timing plans to ensure the design team is able to deliver to critical program milestones.
  • Identify key mechanical failure modes & validation workstreams in order to capture these.
  • Lead issue resolution for mechanical component failures throughout validation.
  • Support Lead Engineers & Commodity owners with suppliers reviews through design phases, procurement of prototypes and production tooling development system multi-physics FEA models beneficial (static & dynamic).

Design Engineer Role Function

The Design Engineer will create new products and take responsibility from inception to final design within an agreed timeline. You will meet customer and sales expectations through customizing existing products and components to their new product requirements within short deadlines.

Candidate Specification

  • A proven Design Engineer, who is self-motivated and self-managing, with the ability to work autonomously.
  • Essentially, you will have proven experience of designing from concept to final product.
  • Simulation and Testing experience would be highly advantageous.
  • At least five years’ experience in a product development role with plastic and rubber mouldings – ideally.
  • Experience in metal work fabrication, and in sealing technologies to prevent the ingress of water and dust.
  • HNC/HND qualified.
  • Experience in 3D CAD, PTC Creo experience would be an advantage, but is not essential, other 3D proficiencies will be accepted.
  • Works well to deadlines.

The Role

The Design Engineer studies, researches, and develops ideas for new products and the methods used to make them. Working on a wide range of bespoke rotating machinery, that must be functional and reliable, easy, and safe to use, whilst ensuring the design is as cost effective and efficient as possible, including modifying existing products or processes to increase efficiency or improve performance.

Design Engineer Required Experience

  • A 2.1 degree or HND in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • 3D CAD / 2D CAD experience with Solidworks & PDM is strongly desired.
  • Proven experience in an Engineering Design Environment.
  • Rotating Machines / Machinery experience.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes such as machining and fabrication.

PROJECT ENGINEER - ROTATING MACHINERY

Our world-leading client is looking for an experienced Product Engineer, ideally with some rotating machinery experience. This position is inside IR35.

The role is classified as Hybrid, as project/business needs dictate. The candidate will be expected to work 2-3 days in the office per week to support testing and collaboration with team members.

The Product Engineer role involves work across many steps in the product life cycle. Because of the product centred nature of this position, you will very often be a central point of coordination and decision-making between product line engineers, customer teams, systems engineers, purchasing, suppliers and manufacturing.

Contract duration is initially for 12 months, but this may be extended.

Pay: £26.00 - £30.00 per hour (inside IR35)

Product Engineer Candidate Requirements

  • General mechanical engineering experience is a must.
  • Ideally you will have experience in rotating machinery of some type.
  • Prior entry level engineering equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required.
  • Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred.
  • Rotor bearing experience would be an advantage but is not essential.
  • A solid understanding of mechanical engineering and physics allied with good practical and project management skills.
  • Candidate may be trained to perform rotor dynamic analysis to evaluate existing designs and develop new journal bearing systems, so good analytical skills are essential. 
  • Any experience across Acoustics/NVH, Tribology, Fluid Dynamics, Thermodynamics, Applied Mechanics and Materials, to overcome new and existing application and environmental challenges would be useful.

  • The Product Engineer investigates product problems, understands causal mechanisms, recommends appropriate action, owns problem resolution and documents results with guidance from more experienced team members.

Trainee Application Engineer Role Overview

On behalf of our client, we are looking to recruit an enthusiastic individual to train towards and develop in the role of Field Engineer.  In this exciting and varied role, you will learn to provide hands-on support and assistance to their customers, ensuring their product meets performance and application expectations.

Culture and Improvements

  • Instrumental in the development of a culture of determining root cause and providing cost-effective solutions.
  • Become an active Operational process owner / team member. Ensure the continuous development of the Quality Management System (QMS) in consultation with the Operations management team.

Systems and Compliance

  • Involvement in external accreditations such as ISO 9001- & third-party audits.

Measurement, Analysis, Root Cause and Action Management

  • Instrumental in the operation of the monthly Quality Improvement meeting. Contribute to communication formats – Quality Flashes, Toolbox Talks, 8D. Identify needs, promote and initiate relevant Quality and related skills training. Support in the continued development of Quality Induction Training.

Testing

  • Utilise relevant materials testing skills in providing a timely service in support of production activities – Dye Pen, Ferrite, Surface Checking, etc. Manage departmental material testing regime – external tests. Record events using recognised systems.

Customer Interface

  • Liaise with customer representatives with respect to physical checks and inspections (in line with customer order and documentation requirements). Input of specific inspection activities to enable the development of ITP’s.

Supplier Interface

  • Proactive liaison with relevant internal departments in problem-solving with suppliers. Immediate supplier liaison on problems associated to deviations to standards, specifications and drawings.
