We are working with an engineering research organisation that is tasked on behalf of their clients and customers to prove if theoretical and concept mechanical R&D Projects can be developed successfully through prototyping, material and life-cycle testing.

Based in the heart of the Research Team the role will have responsibility for:

Designing a wide variety of mechanical components and assemblies in support of the research activities, including rotating test rigs running at speeds of up to 20,000 rpm and diverse fluid systems. The role holder will work as part of a small team, using 3D CAD Software to produce high quality models and manufacturing drawings to BS8888. Additionally, the role holder will liaise with manufacturers, suppliers and technical service colleagues in order to take these components from concept through to commissioned test rig. On occasion, the role holder may directly support the running of a test rig, working closely with the researcher.

Provide a principal role in the design and development of new test rigs

Working with industrial customers and researchers the role will develop outline requirements into detailed specification documents. They will then translate these into conceptual designs which will be reviewed by colleagues and presented to researchers and industrial customers. Finally, the role will develop detailed 3D models and produce the required drawings and documentation for manufacturers and technical services colleagues.

Experience is required in:

  • Designing (from concept to manufacture) a wide variety of components and assemblies, typically associated with high speed rotative test rigs and oil systems.
  • Production of detailed models using 3D CAD Software
  • Generating detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings to BS8888.
  • Some good exposure Finite element analysis
  • As the designer, the role will often be required to support external contactors and technical services colleagues during the commissioning phase of new test rigs and facilities. This will require a positive and proactive approach to problem solving in order to meet tight deadlines.
  • Support testing on rigs
  • On occasion the role holder will be required to directly support researchers using the test rigs. This will typically take the form of hand-over training and familiarisation.
  • The role will be responsible for achieving and maintaining high standards with regard to technical support of the research programs thereby ensuring the efficient delivery of high quality research facilities to agreed timescales.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Mechanical engineering qualification to BEng level or similar
  • Proven concept and detail design skills
  • Demonstrated capability with use of at least one parametric 3D CAD package.
  • Drafting to BS8888 or equivalent standards.
  • GD&T.
  • Clear communication skills at all levels.
  • Proven overall concept and design skills applied to rotating shaft/bearing systems.
  • Knowledge of requirements for designs involving high rotational speeds.
  • Application of electric motors, drives and mechanical transmissions
