Design Engineer Candidate Requirements

  • HND or suitable mechanical engineering design experience. A Degree would be ideal but isn’t essential.

  • Full system design experience would be preferred.

Role Overview

Manufacturing Engineer Candidate Requirements

  • HND or equivalent or where a person can demonstrate extensive experience in mechanical engineering.
  • Several years of experience in complex product configuration and systems setup.

  • Extensive experience of engineering change order processes, product change processes and implications.

Manufacturing Engineer Key Responsibilities

Being actively involved in the continuous process improvement within assembly/manufacturing you will be a key figure in your ability to:

  • Identify and action waste elimination through response to Takt time variation.
  • Define and implement build processes with consideration to appropriate Health & Safety and Quality standards. 
  • Ensure the support process documentation with particular attention to visual management techniques.
  • Using a “hands on” approach you will proactively utilise both lean principles and problem-solving tools and techniques within the workplace to respond to “Takt time variation”, build quality issues.

Investigate and resolve manufacturing related problems, Cost of Quality concerns and issues raised by teams on Problem and Countermeasure boards, leading problem-solving teams where appropriate

Be responsible for signing product change notifications ensuring that:

  • A thorough feasibility analysis has been conducted 
  • Understand any implications regarding process/man assignment changes
  • Highlighting tooling requirements
  • Fully understanding all Health and Safety implications for any proposed change 
  • Fully understand any production related cost. 

Work with colleagues in all cross-functional projects to ensure smooth transition across the manufacturing facility. One Manufacturing Engineer will be nominated as the department’s representative on major projects and will be responsible for ensuring that all relevant information is transferred to the project team and back to the department.

Although the Manufacturing Engineer will have an area of specialism within the product range, this does not exclude them from taking ownership of issues or projects in other areas if departmental workload so dictates.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Manufacturing Engineering Manager will lead the Manufacturing Engineering department. 

You will be responsible for the design and layout of manufacturing areas including tooling specifications and equipment. You will create assembly processes and work instructions, supporting manufacturing assembly problems daily. You will ensure all processes and tooling meet any legal compliance standards required including ergonomic assessments and COSHH register. 

The Manufacturing Engineering Manager is responsible for efficiency savings by process design. You will work closely with the Engineering team and suppliers to promote design for Manufacturing ‘DFM’ methods. Where possible you will poka-yoke to remove possible assembly errors within the manufacturing process.

You will create a culture of continuous improvement within the manufacturing and other teams, creating a high performing team.

Candidate Requirements

  • HND, BEng or direct relevant experience in Manufacturing. MSc or CEng would be desirable.

  • Able to create project plans and track progress – deliverables, Time/Cost/Delivery also Identify and Mitigate risk.
  • Held roles as project manager and/or engineering team leader with responsibility for significant projects.
  • A good understanding of engineering organisations, support systems and processes. 
  • Excellent understanding of Manufacturing and Manufacturing methods and tools.
  • Excellent problem solver – able to work independently and also lead teams to problem solve.
  • Hands on, willing to have direct involvement at every stage of the process – from Pre-assembly to final production and life cycle of the product.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the Health and Safety of your team. You will make sure that your team follow strict Health and Safety guides in place and that any tasks are covered by a current risk assessment. You will make sure that any contractors or supplier representatives have correct documentation to work on site. You will ensure all new assembly methods are reviewed and an assessment is completed, COSHH information is maintained and protective equipment, if required, is available for manufacturing with correct instructions and training methods.
  • Lead and motivate the team to create a high performing environment where all team members are fully engaged and team members feel individually accountable for their work tasks. Holding regular reviews and constructive feedback to the team, as a team and individually. Measured by teams’ performance and completed tasks/project timing.
  • Assembly – ensure all products (new) are introduced with complete work instructions, and work assignments are available to support the product run rate, work instructions will include torque values or reference to a tool (easily identifiable) and any special information regarding lifting equipment or care points. Measured by review of operating work instructions and work assignments.
  • Continuous improvement – continuously drive the team to create improvements and savings within manufacturing identifying opportunities and setting challenging targets to each team member. Measured by evidence of saving or process improvement (can be related to Safety).
  • Drives a DFM “Design for manufacture” culture during early design concept reviews and prototype builds, working with the Engineering team helping to identify poka-yoke final assembly methods to reduce potential assembly errors. Measured by improvement in assembly quality and ease of assembly.
  • Lead the engineering change process – making sure all parts are correctly trailed and approved before introduction and all production information is updated, pick sheet update and assembly instructions and timing is completed. Measured by successful introduction to assembly of new parts.
  • Control and allocate resource according to priorities and projects assigned. Measured by clear project plans and detailed resource plans for all key activities.
  • Supports assembly when there is a need for technical support or any other special business requirements. This includes fault finding or H&S investigations or related questions. Measured by production response time & audit of request logs.
